Soft cheeses are generally young, fresh cheeses that are creamy and easily spread. They have a lot of moisture from water and butterfat in them – this is because as time passes, cheeses slowly lose moisture which turns them hard, which is why these cheeses are typically eaten while young, generally after a month or so from their production. Typically, the softer the cheese, the younger it is.

Types of Soft Cheese

There is no “one type” of soft cheese, but rather like a blank canvas, cheesemakers put their own twist to these delicious options.

Goat cheeses

These can be made from basically any type of milk, like cow, goat or sheep, or a combination of two or even three. Goat varieties include classic choices like buchette, valencay, and all crottin chevres. More unique choices made in America include Cypress Grove’s Purple Haze and Truffle Tremor.

Soft Blue Cheese

These are typically creamy, yes, but also piquant and bold, thanks to that wonderful blue mold. The combination of creamy texture and the earthiness of the blue mold makes for one of the most stunning blends in the world. Some shining examples include Cabrales and Queso Valdeon. Shop Gourmet Food Store for a great selection of Italian, creamy French fromages and more!

We carry delicate goat cheeses that are soft to the bite, incredibly smooth authentic mozzarellas that are rich with cream, cream-infused decadent French Delice, spreadable blues and smooth sheep's milk. Perfect for the cheeseboard, these are easy to cut, and are always a crowd-pleasing option for an appetizer - and amazing for dessert!

From sweet to savory, light and fresh or dense and velvety, you'll find soft creamy varieties infused with dried fruit, herbs, and even some smoky options. We carry artisan varieties made in American creameries, while also stocking the classic soft French and Italian favorites that we just can't live without. Whether you're spreading them, melting them, or cooking something amazing with them, explore our list of soft delicacies.

Soft Cheese Questions And Answers

Q:Can you freeze soft cheese?
A:Yes, you can freeze soft cheese, but it may alter its texture. Soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert, and fresh goat cheese may become crumbly or grainy after freezing and thawing due to the separation of moisture and fats. However, if you plan to use the cheese in cooked dishes where texture is less important, freezing can be a viable option to extend its shelf life. It's recommended to wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or place it in an airtight container before freezing to minimize freezer burn and preserve its flavor as much as possible. When thawing, do so gradually in the refrigerator to minimize texture changes.
Q:How long does soft cheese last?
A:Most soft cheeses last about 7 days in the fridge.
Q:What is soft cheese?
A:Soft cheeses are young, with a creamy texture, rich in moisture derived from water and butterfat.
