Origin
Berkshire Kurobuta pork is a particular breed of pig that originates in the Berkshire region of England. Rich with history, this breed is deemed heritage, and a staple for centuries in the English countryside. Somewhere around the 17th century, Berkshire pigs made their way into Japan, where they became wildly popular and renamed “Kurobuta”, a Japanese term for “black pig”, the color of the hogs that deliver this succulent meat.
Today Berkshire is available in America, where it’s raised with meticulous care in farms across the United States, especially the midwest. American Berkshire is one of the best you’ll ever come across!
What makes this meat so special is the iconic marbling that the privileged genetics of this breed offers. It’s this rich history that translates into sumptuous flavor - because authentic Berkshire Kurobuta must have a proven lineage, it means you’re guaranteed meat with all the flavorful genetics it supplies.
The Berkshire Kurobuta Difference
Marbling - the fine threads of intramuscular fat that run through the meat - . Imagine thin, delicate lines of fat distributed throughout the muscle fibers of the animal. This is what gives Berkshire Kurobuta pork its characteristic juiciness, tenderness, and flavor. When you cook Berkshire, these fat threads melt and spread throughout the meat, enhancing its taste and texture. The result is pork that is incredibly moist and flavorful, with a buttery smoothness that sets it apart from other types of pork.
Compared to regular pork, this meat is sweeter and much juicier, with a buttery texture that people describe as “melt in your mouth”. It’s been popular for a long time in high-end restaurants, but lately, as it’s been more available, it’s easier to find it for home cooking. It’s so simple - buy online and have it shipped overnight to your home!
